The Japanese artist, Yuichi Yokoyama, born in 1967, lives and works in the suburbs of Tokyo. After graduating from the painting department of Musashino Art University, he first dedicated himself exclusively to painting, before expanding his graphic and pictorial research into the field of comic strips.

Through his work, Yokoyama endeavors to explore a radically different world, to present the fragments of something outward, elsewhere, of an unpredicted future. Landscapes and architectures are made of simple volumes, in which a clear predilection for a straight line appears; there are no women, whereas men, with masks and disconcerting guises, coldly indulge in opaque actions. Yokayama’s drawings are like nothing known. Therefore, regarding him, it is pointless to strive and use the customary distinctions (manga, comic strip, graphic novel…): his work – without pretention or provocation and voluntarism- far from any given category, just ignores influences and systems as well as styles.

Ourselves is a portrait series with distinctive compositions and colors. It was first shown in his exhibition CORNER at NANZUKA Gallery in Tokyo.
